VENUE The Second Berry Blues and Comedy Festival / December 3-5, 2004
About the Venue (scroll down to About Berry)

The Great Southern Hotel
The Great Southern Hotel is a typically Australian country hotel bounded by wide timber verandas. However, this is where the comparison with other Australian country hotels ends. The Great Southern Hotel has many features which make it a truly unique landmark.

Ronato Sburlati writes: "The furniture inside the hotel is unrivalled anywhere. The tables and stools are made of logs and tree roots and branches beautifully (naturally) shaped and polished. One of the tables has been given the appearance of a horse, which patrons can sit around on stools made with genuine saddles and others covered in cow hides. The verandas are furnished with old, rustic timber tables, and benches facing the busy main street.

The hotel is adorned with the most spectacular array of antiques, collectables and artefacts. A patron can sit and drink for hours, even days in awe of the decor. Genuine antelope trophies hang from some of the walls and in various corners are genuine carved wooden Indians from the wild west. The pub's chandeliers are made from wagon wheels and a collection of football jumpers and jockey shirts hang from a plough rail fixed to the ceiling. A characteristically medieval rack with chains and locks stands ominously near the front door, and a large replica bull looks to be charging at you from above the main bar which is covered with corrugated iron.

For the sports minded, one can sight boxing gloves, croquet sticks, antique motorbikes, a surfboard, (which points to the direction of the Bistro), sailing boat montages of local entries in the Sydney to Hobart, and past football team photos. On one wall is a set of photos which prove it can be done.....one of the Hotel's patrons is shown drinking a beer whilst standing on his head!!!!

Our political heritage is also represented in the hotel, with a wine cask fashioned into the bust of one of our most famous prime ministers. Transport is well represented too, with memorabilia from old buses and train stations.

The service at the Great Southern Hotel is absolutely fabulous for the weary traveller! The beer is always cold and served in chilled, clean glasses by the friendly staff. If you prefer you can have a coffee or a cappuccino. The hotel also has a bistro serving great-value counter lunches which are very popular.

On Friday nights and Sunday afternoons the Great Southern is host to live music and some of the best blues bands have played in the "Top Pub". So if you find yourself travelling through Berry, we recommend that you stop off and relax at the Great Southern Hotel with either a cold or hot drink while taking in its laid-back atmosphere and maybe even recall some good old memories while browsing through its memorabilia."

About Berry
• Don't forget to visit our links page for up-to-date accommodation options in the Berry district.

The township
The township of Berry is located just inland from the coast and approximately 2 & 1/2 hours south of Sydney and a similar distance from Australia's capital, Canberra. This makes it ideal for a day trip or weekend stopover. Berry is an historic town set close to the escarpment of the Great Dividing Mountain Range, nestled amonst rolling hills and farmland. It is renowned for its quaint old world charm and relaxed atmosphere.

A visit to Berry, also known as 'The Town of Trees' offers many pleasant distractions from the hustle and bustle of city living and should you choose an overnight stay there are a myriad of accommodation options ranging from exclusive country retreats to B&B's and pub style rooms, and of course our Pass/camping combo offer.

Connoisseurs of fine food will drool over the large number of quality dining establishments located within the town. From fine restaurants, to cafes, pubs, clubs and even the cake shop - which is highly regarded - you will never want for a sumptuous snack or delicious meal in Berry.

Craft and gift shops are plentiful with most offering unique local craft and products. Browsing the many antique and old wares shops is another aspect of the town that constantly draws visitors from far and wide.

Find yourself that unique item at The Berry Markets - which commences early on the first Sunday of the month at The Showground. The festival coincides with the market day so there will be plenty of time to browse, and then it's only a short stroll back to The Great Southern Hotel for a cool drink and some hot blues.

Berry also has a museum which showcases much of the local and regional history, and is highly recommended for those interested in such things.

A 'must do' is a ride on the magnificent horse drawn Wakeling Carriage that takes visitors on a memorable journey around the town. Children especially will enjoys this, and in particular the interaction with the magnificent draught horses. Horse riding is also available also within an easy driving distance of the town centre.

Sensational beaches at Gerringong and Gerroa are within a short drive from town and are known for their quality surf breaks and golden sands.
