Minmi means "Place of the Giant Lillie"
In it's hey day Minmi had 9 pubs these included the
Bonnie Doon, Commercial, Royal, Hand of Friendship, Railway,
Northumberland, Miners arms and the Minmi Inn.
Several thousand people worked in the local mines and it had
3 Dance Halls, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, a Brass Band and Outstanding Choir,
Railway to Hexham with four journeys on Saturday and the Horse Drawn Trolley
on Sundays at 1/- (one shilling) return. There was 3 Butchers, a Jeweller and
Several Grocery Shops.
The local school had 10 Teachers and approximately 3430 students.
Minmi Hotel was built by Mr Clarke in 1861 and
the licensee was William Edward Daniel,
Michael & Mary Ellen Cane were the owners from 1913 -1924.
